Bordeaux 2020 80 nicht ganz so transparent wie Haut Bailly, dafür besitzt er mehr Fülle und generöse Süße. Seine hohe Gerbstoffextraktion besitzt viel innere Spannung, satte Konzentration und einen etwas rauen Verlauf, alles ist sehr kompakt miteinander verwoben. Sein leicht trockener Nachhall meldet an, dass er noch einige Reifezeit benötigt. Parker 96 – 98 | Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Pape Clement comes barreling out of the glass with bold notes of cassis, plum preserves and licorice, giving way to scents of cedar chest, crushed rocks, charcoal and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate is tightly coiled with beautiful tension and a firm, finely grained texture locking in the layers of black fruits and minerals, finishing with great length and energy. The blend this year is 50 % Cabernet Sauvignon and 50 % Merlot, aging mainly in French oak barriques, 66 % new, with about 10 % aging in large oak foudres. The wine will spend approximately 18 months in barrels. Galloni 95 – 97 | The 2020 Pape Clément is so impressive. Red cherry, plum, cedar, mint, tobacco, blood orange and rose petal all build as the 2020 opens in the glass. Vibrant and beautifully delineated, the 2020 has a ton to offer. The 2020 exudes purity, energy and breathtaking balance. It is one of the finest recent vintages I can remember tasting. Martin 95 – 97 | The 2020 Pape Clément, which I afforded an hour’s aeration, has a very precise bouquet of pure blackberry, cedar, mint and violet aromas, quite discreet but paradoxically intense; these aromas are very seductive. The palate is medium-bodied with ripe, lithe tannins framing wonderfully pure black fruit laced with crushed stone and a judicious touch of white pepper. Seamless in texture, this is a sophisticated Pape Clément in the making, an outstanding wine that should age brilliantly in bottle. Suckling 97 – 98 | Superb aromas of blackberries, crushed stones, iodine and graphite. Full-bodied with ultra fine tannins and a balanced finish. Such length and beauty. Mit 20 % Ganztraubenpressung für Cabernet Franc und Merlot soll der Most mehr Frische, Spannung und Salzigkeit erlangen, auch der Alkoholgehalt sei dadurch etwas niedriger. Die Extraktion erfolgt extrem sanft mit längerer Maischestandzeit. Geschwefelt wird erst nach der Gärung, der Ausbau erfolgt zum größten Teil in Barriques (80 % neu) und Fudern von Stockinger sowie 160-Liter-Amphoren und 400-Liter-Krügen aus einem sandsteinartigen Material. Der Les Carmes kommt ausschließlich von der 7,6 Hektar Kernlage in der Nähe von Haut-Brion am Stadtrand von Bordeaux. In den Blend des 2020ers gelangten 40 % Cabernet Franc, 34 % Cabernet Sauvignon und 26 % Merlot mit 13,65 % Alkohol. Dunkle, satte Farbe. Der Les Carmes Haut-Brion fördert im Geruch eine würzig-kühle Frucht mit viel Fleisch und dunkelbeerigen Aromen hervor, ganz klar, etwas karamellig und mit toskanischer Süße, dezent untypisch. Dicht und konzentriert zeigt er sich im Mund sehr lebendig und druckvoll, bleibt in der Mitte kurz stehen und trocknet mit leicht stumpfen Gerbstoffen etwas ab. Er bildet eine feine Adstringenz mit distinguierter Bitterkeit, dann reißt ihn die schwelgerische Extraktsüße im Hintergrund wieder mit. Der 2020er Les Carmes haut-Brion ist wie immer ein ganz eigener, sehr mutiger und beeindruckend würziger Wein. Er verfügt über viel Gerbstoffausstrahlung mit leicht rauer Prägung, ist weit und würzig am Gaumen aufgespannt und bietet reichlich Gesprächsstoff für die beteiligten Genießer. Suckling 97 – 98 | Exotic fruit aromas of blackberry, blueberry, peach and orange peel. It’s full-bodied with a vertical flow of layered, chewy tannins that are integrated and intense. Extremely polished and focused. Crushed stone to the fruit in the aftertaste. Some bark and forest flowers, too. Great potential. Parker 95 – 97 + | Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion issues forth a beguiling array of savory scents—black olives, charcuterie, bouquet garni and Sichuan pepper—over a core of bright redcurrant jelly, black cherries and cassis scents, plus fragrant hints of rose petals and preserved mandarin peel. The medium-bodied palate is refreshing and elegantly styled yet with a rock-solid backbone of firm, finely grained tannins and bags of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This is a stunning expression of the vintage that should be long lived and age with fantastic grace. Galloni 95 – 97 + | The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is dazzling, but it is also a wine of reserve and understatement. I image it will be some years, at the very least, be fore the 2020 is ready to show all it has to offer. Today, it is not particularly expressive. I can’t wait to taste the 2020 from bottle, and won’t be at all surprised if it turns out even better than this note suggests. Martin 94 – 96 | The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked at 38 hl / ha and matured in 80 % new oak, 11 % foudres and the remainder in clay amphorae. It has an intense bouquet of blackberry and wild strawberry, plus some light torrefactory scents, undergrowth and black pepper, all delineated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with beautifully defined black fruit and delicate touches of mint, bell pepper and cracked black pepper. Though it shares the same surname, it is interesting to see how, stylistically, it is cut from a totally different cloth than Haut-Brion and La Mission, which each possess their own distinct attributes. Quite thickly textured and weighty on the finish with a long, spicy aftertaste, this is a serious Les Carmes Haut-Brion with a very long future ahead. 2020 CHÂTEAU SMITH HAUT LAFITTE 178,00 €/Ltr. 133,50 € Péssac-Léognan rouge Parker 98 – 100 | Galloni 95 – 97 | Martin 95 – 97 | Suckling 99 – 100 extraprima 96 – 97 | Der rote Smith Haut Lafitte besteht aus 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc und 1 % Petit Verdot mit satten 14,5 % Alkohol, ausgebaut in 55 % neuen Barriques. Mit nur 30 hl / ha Ertrag wurden 30 % weniger geerntet als im Vorjahr, wiederum nur ein Drittel davon konnte in den Grand Vin gelangen, der Rest deklassiert. Schwarze, dichte Farbe. Sehr tiefgründig und enorm vielschichtig im Geruch, zeigt der 2020er Smith Haut Lafitte einen dunkelbeerig-teerigen und leicht schokoladigen Ansatz mit etwas Schießpulver im Obertonbereich. Unglaublich frisch und vielschichtig im Mund, enorm feinkörnig, detailliert und schokoladig-würzig, besitzt er eine satte, dichte Konzentration, mit fleischiger Fülle und großer Rasse. Seine enorme, innere Spannung ist von großer Energie und Länge getragen. Hochkonzentriert, erscheint der rote Smith Haut Lafitte etwas würziger, jedoch nicht ganz so erhaben, geschliffen und feinkörnig wie Haut Bailly. Suckling 99 – 100 | So much blackcurrant, graphite and iodine character. Full-bodied. Incredible quality to the tannins. They are polished yet powerful. It’s so long and complete with such depth and toned muscles. Vertical. Very fresh and energetic. Will it be better than the famous 2015? Maybe the best ever. From organically grown grapes. 65 % cabernet sauvignon, 30 % merlot, 4 % cabernet franc and 1 % petit verdot. Parker 98 – 100 | A blend of 65 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 30 % Merlot, 4 % Cabernet Franc and 1 % Petit Verdot aging in 60 % new barriques, the very deep purple-black colored 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte makes an impactful entrance, opening with flamboyant notes of blackcurrant pastilles, chocolate-covered cherries and molten licorice, leading to nuances of ground cloves, woodsmoke, crushed rocks and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with opulent black fruit preserves and shimmering mineral sparks, framed by exquisitely ripe and fantastically firm tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with epically long-lasting earthy and savory layers. This is the singular voice of Smith Haut Lafitte at its finest, and wow-oh-wow is it worth a listen. This 2020 has an alcohol of 14.5 % with a pH of 3.65. The tannins this year were a little higher than 2018 and 2019. A little less than a third of production went into this grand vin. Galloni 95 – 97 | The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte is a thrilling wine of grandeur and spellbinding beauty. The aromatics literally soar out of the glass, perhaps driven by a touch more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. A vertical, explosive wine, the 2020 possesses tremendous energy. It is a rapturous wine that will delight readers for years to come. A move towards gentler extractions, with less oak impact, allows the purity of the fruit to come through loud and clear. Inky dark cherry, plum, mocha, dried herbs and lavender are all amplified in the 2020, but what I admire most is a total sense of harmony. I can’t wait to see how it ages, as evolution has at times been the sole Achilles heel here. Martin 95 – 97 | The 2020 Smith Haut Lafitte was picked from September 9, the yields 20 % down on average due to the dry summer period, and matured in 60 % new oak with no vin de presse. This actually blossomed after an hour’s opening, revealing exquisite blackberry, briar, crushed rock and light rose petal scents, very nuanced considering the growing season and the 14.5° alcohol. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a very fine line of acidity that keeps this on its tippy-toes. Disarmingly pure, its silky texture is very appealing, likewise the veering toward more red berry fruit lacked with white pepper toward the finish. This may well surpass the previous two vintages.
